Product Description
Sodium dithionite, chemically known as sodium bisulfite (molecular formula Na₂S₂O₄), is a strong reducing agent appearing as a white crystalline powder or pale yellow powder. It remains relatively stable under dry conditions at room temperature but exhibits highly reactive chemical properties. Exposure to moist air causes decomposition with heat generation, potentially leading to spontaneous combustion and the release of toxic sulfur dioxide gas.
Due to its potent reducing properties, sodium dithionite plays a critical role in the textile printing and dyeing industry. It is widely used for reductive dyeing, printing, bleaching, and decolorization of fabrics. Its name originates from its ability to safely remove dyeing defects, enabling “insurance” through color removal and re-dyeing. Additionally, it is applied in pulp bleaching within the paper industry, as well as in food processing (e.g., maltose production) and precious metal recovery. Given its flammability upon contact with water and tendency toward spontaneous combustion, storage and transportation of sodium dithionite must strictly adhere to hazardous chemical management regulations. It must be kept in a cool, dry place and maintained in sealed containers.
